Fish Welfare Mini Symposium and Science Day at VLIZ

How do fish perceive pain? What are the research findings about pain perception and stress? How can one measure natural fish behavior? Is there evidence-based knowledge to optimally handle, transport and keep fish? To what extent do insights in animal welfare apply to fish? What do we observe in aquaculture, wild-capture fisheries, and research surveys as applied challenges and potential solutions? What about legislation and experiments to mitigate current practices?

During this one-day symposium, jointly organised by ILVO (Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food) and VLIZ (Flanders Marine Institute), the international knowledge landscape will be explored to prioritize future actions. On 29th November 2019 in Ostend, Belgium.

Attendance to this Mini Symposium is free. Registration is mandatory and no later than November 21st, 2019

Science Day

To celebrate Science Day 2019 on Sunday, 24th November, the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) offers guided tours on the Flemish research vessel Simon Stevin. In addition, VLIZ will demonstrate the variety of marine research at the Marine Station Ostend (MSO). During this edition, scientists reveal the technological progress in marine research that is no longer (science) fiction. Build your own underwater robot, compete against a computer in identifying plankton, follow a live demo of a diving deep-sea robot, attend fascinating lectures and take a look inside a real measuring buoy. We have something for everyone!

When: Sunday, 24th November, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Where: Marine Station Ostend, Slipwaykaai 2, 8400 Ostend
Lectures (in dutch) take place at the Marine Station Ostend at 11:30AM, 2PM, 3PM, and 4PM.
